DESCRIPTION:Since 1991\, the annual Heartwood Forest Council has been a forum where activists gather to forge the future of the forest protection movement. Each year we meet over the Memorial Day Weekend in a different part of the Heartwood region\, to bring regional focus on local issues. This year we are holding the 32nd annual Heartwood Forest Council in southeast Ohio at the United Plant Savers land sanctuary. \nThe United Plant Savers is a center for the protection of native medicinal plants\, fungi\, and their habitats while ensuring renewable populations for future generations. United Plant Savers is a founding member of the Appalachian Forest Farming Coalition\, providing resources for private forest landowners\, and members of the Forest Carbon Coalition\, a network of scientists\, conservationists\, and environmental justice allies working together to protect US forests from harmful logging practices that are driving climate change\, and to restore one of the world’s most vital carbon sinks to its natural capacity.

SUMMARY:Members-Only Hike to Lilley Cornett Woods
DESCRIPTION:Join Kentucky Heartwood staff and members for a guided exploration of Lilley Cornett Woods!\n\nLocated in Letcher County in the southeastern corner of Kentucky\, Lilley Cornett Woods (LCW) encompasses 554 acres of mixed mesophytic forest. A portion of the total acreage\, 252 acres\, is designated as “old-growth” forest; a forest which has not undergone any manmade changes in 150 years. Biodiversity of plants and animals abound at LCW. There are over 530 species of flowering plants and an estimated 700 breeding pairs of birds present. In addition\, a variety of small mammals\, amphibians and reptiles call Lilley Cornett Woods home.\n\nOur very own Jim Scheff conducted his graduate research at Lilley Cornett Woods which was an investigation into the development of old-growth forest characteristics in second-growth forests in the Daniel Boone National Forest. It is Jim’s work and research that informs our science based approach to protecting our public land and we can’t wait to show you why old-growth forests are so important!\n\nTrips to LCW are by appointment only and will be facilitated by one of their on-staff guides. SUMMARY:Member's only hike to Beaver Creek Wilderness\, Burnside\, KY
DESCRIPTION:Join Kentucky Heartwood staff and members as we explore the Three Forks of Beaver Trail in the Beaver Creek Wilderness.  We will start on the top of the plateau\, hiking through a mature forest that KY Heartwood successfully advocated to exclude from logging as part of the Greenwood project. We will quickly travel below the cliff line\, where the Wilderness boundary starts\, and explore Beaver Creek and its tributaries. Then we will climb out of the Wilderness and hike a short distance to the Three Forks overlook\, giving us a view of the area that we just traversed.  \nQuiet contemplation will be encouraged for several legs of this hike to preserve the spirit of the wilderness.  \nThe Hike: 3 miles on trail. The formal hike will take about 3 hours\, but there is potential for additional exploration.  \nMeeting point: At the Three Forks of Beaver Trailhead\, located here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/vFyxd1VZrUEkzr7c7 \nMeeting time: 10:45 – Hike will begin promptly at 11:00am. Please arrive a bit before 11 to ensure we stay on schedule. \nRegistration: Please fill out our registration form and complete for each individual planning to attend. We must have a liability waiver on file for every attendee. \nMore about Beaver Creek Wilderness: \nThe 4\,877 acre Beaver Creek Wilderness was designated by Congress as part of the 1975 Eastern Wilderness Act\, which preserved this area “as an enduring resource of wildness which shall be managed to promote and perpetuate the wilderness character of the land and its specific values of solitude\, physical and mental challenge\, scientific study\, inspiration\, and primitive recreation for the benefit of all of the American people of present and future generations.” \nBeaver Creek Wilderness is unusual in its boundary. The designated Wilderness includes only lands below the canyon’s cliffline\, and so follows the pattern of Beaver Creek and its entrenched tributaries. While it is easy to find solitude and inspiration in the hidden depths of forest beneath the canyon walls\, in many places the Wilderness is less than a half-mile in width.  \nWith very few exceptions\, the Forest Service is prohibited from logging\, burning\, or using herbicides in Wilderness areas. However\, the Forest Service is logging more than 1\,000 acres of forest near the Beaver Creek Wilderness boundary.  \n  \nWhat to wear and bring: There is an optional creek crossing that will be more enjoyable with waterproof boots and hiking poles. Bring sufficient water and snacks – we will stop for a snack break creekside at the spot where the Three Forks of Beaver Creek come together – the Middle Fork joins Freeman Fork and Little Hurricane Fork. You will likely have cell service at the trailhead\, but it will not work inside the Wilderness.  \nPlease be aware that Kentucky Heartwood is not equipped to provide any emergency care\, and participants are responsible for their own well-being. The registration form includes a liability waiver that all participants must sign.

DESCRIPTION:The Kentucky Native Plant Society (KNPS) and the Office of Kentucky Nature Preserves (OKNP) is co-hosting the 4th annual Kentucky Botanical Symposium on Friday\, February 2nd\, from 9:00AM-11:30AM EST. DESCRIPTION:The Biden administration has announced that it is taking comments on a proposal aimed at protecting mature and old-growth forests across America’s national forest system. The proposal includes some great language that could represent critical protections and planning for old-growth forests. \nBut it also leaves the door wide open for the Forest Service to continue cutting and clearing mature and old-growth forests when they decide that preserving these forests “is not relevant or beneficial.” \nTo help the public better understand and engage in the ongoing public comment process\, Kentucky Heartwood will host an online discussion led by our Ecologist\, Jim Scheff. The discussion will cover the positive aspects of the proposal along with its flaws and vulnerabilities\, with an emphasis on how it could affect the conservation of mature and old-growth forests across Kentucky’s Daniel Boone National Forest. \n  \nHow: Register via the link here! DESCRIPTION:Julian Campbell will present a critical review of vegetation issues in “so-called” stream restoration on Daniel Boone National Forest. \nWhen: Monday\, January 15\, 2024 @ 7:00pm \nWhere: Hunter Presbyterian Church\, 109 Rosemont Garden\, Lexington KY. \nExcerpt from Julian: “I first became aware of the potential pitfalls in so-called “stream restoration” 10 years ago at Cane Run on the north side of Lexington. That project came with several unsupported claims about its benefits. But its primary motivation seems to have been political\, as a “Supplementary Environmental Project” (SEP) costing about one million dollars. The EPA approved this SEP as a face-saving substitute for the city having to pay a fine of the same amount (due to its long history of sewage-related infractions). I have since learned that various kinds of “stream restoration” across the nation often have had questionable motives and outcomes.”
