SUMMARY:Old-Growth Field Trip in the Jellico Mountains
DESCRIPTION:Kentucky Heartwood will be leading a hike and field trip to see some outstanding forests in the Jellico Mountains threatened with logging under the U.S. Forest Service’s proposed Jellico Vegetation Management Project. On this hike we’ll see and discuss examples of mature and old-growth forests\, different forest communities\, and examples of previous forest management\, with incredibly scenic views of the Jellico Mountains. We’ll also visit a newly discovered northern red oak (Quercus rubra) that may be the largest ever measured in Kentucky. This excellent tree is located in an area proposed for clearcutting by the Forest Service. \nThe hike will be approximately 2.5 miles\, moderately strenuous\, and almost entirely off-trail. While there will not be much elevation change\, participants will have to be comfortable with off-trail hiking\, including uneven terrain\, occasional greenbrier\, and a few steep sections. Freshly fallen leaves may make the forest floor a bit “slippery” as well. The hike itself will take about 4 to 4.5 hours. \n📅 WHEN: Saturday December 14th\, 2024\n⏰  TIME: 10:30a – 4:30pm.\n📍 WHERE: Meet at 10:30am in Williamsburg Walmart parking lot off KY-92.\nThe meeting location is in the back of the parking lot across from Huddle House.\nHOW: Register through KY Heartwood by clicking this link. \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Forest Protection Forum
DESCRIPTION:Chuck Willer will Present on “Industrial Forestry and the Water You Drink” \nFor over thirty years\, Chuck Willer has defended public forests and watersheds in Oregon.\nHe has been at the cutting edge of insights into industrial forest management and the impact\nof financial forces on forested landscapes. \nChuck’s work for the past ten years has focused on the drivers of the extinction and climate crises – namely\, the capitalist dynamic with its mandate for endless growth and accumulation. Chuck brings an understanding of non-mainstream economics to bear on the forces transforming society and the natural world. \nIn his discussion for the Forest Protection Forum\, Chuck will examine the transformation of the U.S. economy over the past three decades and its impact on corporate forest ownership and management. He will link Wall Street finance to landscape forest conditions and explain how such conditions harm watersheds and aquatic life. \nGiven the range of his interests and learning\, Chuck Willer can be described as a true polymath. \n  \nRegister for this virtual event HERE.

SUMMARY:32nd Annual Heartwood Forest Council
DESCRIPTION:Since 1991\, the annual Heartwood Forest Council has been a forum where activists gather to forge the future of the forest protection movement. Each year we meet over the Memorial Day Weekend in a different part of the Heartwood region\, to bring regional focus on local issues. This year we are holding the 32nd annual Heartwood Forest Council in southeast Ohio at the United Plant Savers land sanctuary. \nThe United Plant Savers is a center for the protection of native medicinal plants\, fungi\, and their habitats while ensuring renewable populations for future generations. United Plant Savers is a founding member of the Appalachian Forest Farming Coalition\, providing resources for private forest landowners\, and members of the Forest Carbon Coalition\, a network of scientists\, conservationists\, and environmental justice allies working together to protect US forests from harmful logging practices that are driving climate change\, and to restore one of the world’s most vital carbon sinks to its natural capacity.
